Chapter 11

Friday, August 11, 10:00 a.m.

It was two hours before the emergency glass repairman arrived to install a new picture window. Drew stopped at the police precinct on his way to work and filed a formal complaint against Angel. Shirley greeted him with a cautioning eye directed to the waiting area. In his carpenter’s overalls, Hernando sat wringing his baseball cap.

“Drew.” He stood up.

“I told him he needed an appointment,” Shirley said. “He insisted on waiting.”

“Please, I need to talk to you.” He looked distressed and desperate.

“It’s all right, Shirley. Come on in, Hernando.”

Drew closed the door and pointed Hernando to a chair in front of his desk, not bothering to hide his wary resentment. “Why are you here?”

“You heard Nina’s side, now I want you to hear me. After all these years, I owe you a reason.”

“You have five minutes. I have work to do.”

“We should have talked a long time ago. But I wanted nothing to do with you. I was jealous, afraid, you had so many blessings, and I had none until Nina. For the past days I looked in my heart and know I am a very selfish man. Today I have many blessings, more than a man like me should have. I pray God and you will forgive me. I love Nina with all my heart, and I love the two children, Gustavo as much as Candice.”

Drew stood, walked over to the window, and with his back to Hernando, stared down on the street.

“We knew right after Gustavo was born, you were his true father. I said not to tell you. I was afraid she go back to you. You had so much more—more money, big house, security for a woman. I told her that you would never know. That it was our secret. But I was wrong. Some secrets are bad. A boy should know his true father. I so sorry. Please, so sorry.”

Drew didn’t know what to say and so avoided the sight of the man.

“I love my family, I lay down my life for Gustavo. Blame me, but don’t blame Gustavo.” The big pitiful man was crying.

Drew had heard enough. He’d already decided to represent Gee and his decision not to tell Hernando had come from spite. The man had suffered enough. But the groveling was beginning to annoy him.

“I accept your apology. I’ve decided to be Gee’s lawyer. Let’s not talk about the past any longer. I’ll meet with you and Nina sometime this week to go over our strategy.” Drew turned to face the weeping man.

“Thank you,” Hernando whispered. He pulled out his handkerchief and dried his eyes. On the way to the door, the misty eyed carpenter suddenly turned and grabbed Drew in a bear hug.

“Okay, okay,” Drew said. “Let’s not get carried away.”

“One more thing.”

“What’s that?”

“This talk of divorce. I don’t want a divorce, I want my Nina back. When this is over, she plans to go through with it. She still has feelings for you.”

“Hernando, if I could, I would destroy your marriage.
